Yesterday was the most visually rewarding day we have yet had on our adventure across the country. I woke up on a king-sized bed in a comfy hotel room after napping off some severe altitude sickness, and remembered we were at the foot of Pike’s Peak, a daunting 14,000 + foot mountain on the front range in Colorado Springs, Colorado.<\/p>\n

We had expected a long drive, some 500 miles through the rockies, but we were feeling adventurous and decided to take the scenic route. From towering mountains to high-mesa deserts, we encountered a thorough sampling of the vast beauty that hides in this region of the US.<\/p>\n

20+ mile visibility is something to experience<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

We headed through Leadville, and found that the cat’s bodies also take exception to high altitude [pathetic picture from yesterday].<\/p>\n

Fuel burning cars also complain about the lack of oxygen at high altitudes, as we discovered while trying to climb a steep highway grade. Third gear, foot on the floor, 35 miles per hour. The good news is that the wind was nonexistent and we achieved much better fuel mileage than when we were driving west through Kansas.<\/p>\n

As part of our meandering route, we drove through Moab, Utah, and were rewarded with more amazing scenery:<\/p>\n

Cycling and pedestrian bridge. There's an extensive trail system that appears to connect various campsites together.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\"Potash<\/a>\n

We were now at about hour 9, and had 3 hours left to go to our lodging in Utah. Thankfully we were granted a beautiful, lasting sunset.<\/p>\n
